ROMANCING THE QUEEN
It is hard to imagine that the queen whose reign was associated with stifling moral codes was, at least in her younger days, feisty, fun-loving and fiercely independent. The Young Victoria, unlike a lot of British period films, humanises this enigmatic royal, the longest reigning monarch in the country's history (63 years to be exact). While the stiff traditions and drapes of palace life are never quite shed (and they have their own quaint charm, particularly for self-confessed Anglophiles like myself), there are times when Victoria seems like any other girl in love, confused by the conflicting signals of her heart, longing for affection and acceptance. At others, she's a stubborn, even immature 18-year-old, struggling to shoulder the responsibility of heading the largest empire on earth that's thrust upon her after the death of her uncle King William IV (exceptionally essayed by Jim Broadbent).
