Mirch Masala (1985)

Directed by Ketan Mehta, the film featured Smita as the fiery Son Bai alongside a star-studded ensemble that included Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval, Dina Pathak and Paresh Rawal.


Bhumika: The Role (1977)

Smita Patil's greatest role, for which she won her first National Award. Her second award was for Rabindra Dharmaraj's Chakra (1981)


Arth (1982)

Smita Patil was frequently pitted opposite Shabana Azmi. Arth was the semi-autobiographical film from Mahesh Bhatt which was said to based on his extra-marital affair with the late Parveen Babi (played by Patil).


Manthan (1976)

The title song Mero gaam katha parey was sung by Preeti Sagar and was later used as the soundtrack for the television commercial for Amul.


Manthan (1976)

Manthan was based on a story written jointly by Verghese Kurien and director Shyam Benegal and was set amidst the backdrop of the White Revolution of India (Operation Flood) which started in 1970.


Aakrosh (1980)

A brilliant debut by Govind Nihalani, which fetched him a Filmfare award for Best Director. Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri are excellent. Smita Patil plays Om Puri's murdered wife.


Bhumika: The Role (1977)

One of Shyam Benegal's masterpieces, Bhumika was based on the autobiography of Marathi actress Hansa Wadkar. Amol Palekar, Anant Nag and Sulabha Deshpande play significant supporting parts.

Mandi (1983)

With Shabana Azmi and Ila Arun in Shyam Benegal's black comedy from 1983. Smita plays the prized ward Zeenat of brothel madam Rukmini Bai (Azmi). The film (also starring Naseeruddin Shah, Neena Gupta and Soni Razdan) was based on a classic Urdu short story Aanandi by Pakistani writer Ghulam Abbas.
