Bollywood does not cease to be a Hollywood wannabe. Our films rarely ‘cross over’ but our filmmakers, keep trying to ‘go international,’ and with films like Speedy Singhs, failing rather badly. Akshay Kumar produces the film, with Robert Lieberman as director, and launching newcomer Vinay Virmani in the lead.
First of all, how many people are really interested in the travails of Indians living in the West and their cultural confusion? Secondly, how many variations can there be on the underdog-in-sports story? Thirdly, why rehash Bend it Like Beckham and Patiala House? Fourthly, any film that casts Anupam Kher as the angry Daddyji with generation gap issues shows an incredible lack of imagination.
