Great Review. I completely agree with what you wrote. Did Ms Sen try to bring out a Forrest Gump by showing the socio political events? And as you pointed out, the character of Mrinalini was not cut out properly. Probably her worst film

Thanks for your feedback Mr. Ghosal. As you pointed out, perhaps I didn't understand the film...

The protagonist's character didn't connect with me at any level. I did sit through the end, by the way, but it didn't convey any profound meaning to me. I could imagine the profundity that Ms. Sen perhaps had in mind when she planned the film. But I don't think it was borne out by the execution. It happens a lot of times that filmmakers are not able to articulate their ideas as fluently on screen as they imagine them at the writing stage.

I am a great admirer of Ms. Sen's work -- hence i expect her work to be 'complex and insightful' unlike most other Indian filmmakers.

A film can either be entertaining, or thought-provoking or emotionally cathartic. 'The Japanese Wife', for instance, was both thought-provoking and cathartic. One felt for the characters and their peculiar situation and was mesmerized by the lyricism of the storytelling. Sadly, with 'Iti Mrinalini' the experience wasn't repeated.

One thing i could not not understand... why does Aparna Sen has to make 'more complex and insightful film'?

And it is very clear that the reviewer did not (or could not)sit thru the last scene of the movie where the senior actor dies in an encounter where the target of the police is her first lover. Which renders mrinalini's life a series of 'chances and coincidences'.

Just narrating the story in a cynical way does make a popular read but not a worthwhile review...

A reasonable review. I like it. I watched the film, first day first show at Inox, Kolkata. Am quite disappointed with the film.
