IN THE POLITICAL SNAKE PIT
It seems unfair, when Hollywood heartthrobs turn director they make films like The Ides of March. If the star is George Clooney it seems particularly unfair—good looks, worldwide fan following, brains and talent too!
But seriously, Clooney has directed a film that is intelligent and perceptive—like his earlier films Good Night, and Good Luck, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind—even though it is dealing with a scenario that has its pros and cons lined out and hardly anyone can break out of the grid. The title (from Julius Caesar) already indicates that world of politics is corrupt, ruthless, fickle, sleazy and soul-sapping. In one world, ugly. That picture is not new, but every time someone comes up with a movie that portrays this, it shocks us, as well as confirms our worst fears.
