A PACIFIST PLEA
Unlike in the past, this year's Best Foreign Film Oscar-winner, In A Better World has been widely criticised in the American press for being a fallacious projection of European guilt and a pat, soulless fable about violence begetting violence. But it isn't as simple as that. In fact what Susanna Bier's film suggested to this reviewer is the senselessness of violence and how it has little to do with logic and material prosperity. It is merely a function of human discontent that is projected on others in varying degrees of gruesomeness from prosperous Denmark to third-world Africa.
